Is Online Gambling Legal in Canada?

Canada’s legal framework gives provinces a central role in conducting and managing lawful lottery schemes. For players, legality and authorization therefore cannot be answered responsibly with one nationwide list of “legal casinos.”
Criminal Code foundation
Section 207(1)(a) makes it lawful for a provincial government to conduct and manage a lottery scheme in the province in accordance with provincial law.
Single-event sports betting
Federal amendments enacted through the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act removed the former federal prohibition that prevented provinces from offering single-event sports betting, subject to the provincial framework.
Provincial implementation
Each province can structure legal gambling differently. Ontario and Alberta have competitive regulated online markets involving private operators within provincial conduct-and-management systems.
