Sportsbook Line Movement Explained
What a changing point spread, total or moneyline means—and what it does not prove.
Quick answer
Line movement means the offered market price changed. It can reflect new information, market-wide price discovery, betting flow, liability management or a combination. A move is evidence of repricing, not proof of a single cause.
Price versus line
A sportsbook can move the numerical line, the price attached to the same line, or both.
Information
Injuries, lineups, weather, starting-goalie announcements and other news can change estimated probabilities.
Market discovery
Books observe and react to broader market prices and betting activity.
Risk management
A book may alter prices as its exposure and desired order flow change.
Do not infer certainty
A move toward one side does not guarantee that side is correct or that “sharp money” caused the move.
