Gambling Budget & Session Cost
A practical way to think about bankroll, total wagering action, game speed and theoretical expected cost.
A gambling budget is a loss limit, not a target to spend. To understand how quickly risk can accumulate, track both your stake size and the total amount wagered over the session.
Bankroll versus action
A $100 bankroll can produce far more than $100 of total action if winnings and remaining balance are repeatedly wagered.
Theoretical session cost
A simple estimate is total action × house edge. If total action is $2,000 and the game edge is 2%, theoretical expected loss is $40. Short-term results can differ dramatically.
Game speed
Faster betting increases action. Ten-dollar bets at 30 decisions per hour create $300 of hourly action; the same stake at 300 decisions creates $3,000.
Set limits before the first bet
Decide the maximum loss and maximum time in advance. Do not increase the limit to recover previous losses.
When a calculator should not be used
Expected-loss tools are educational, not a way to justify gambling that is unaffordable. If gambling is causing harm or feels difficult to control, use self-exclusion or support resources rather than optimizing session math.
Bankroll and wagering action are different
A $200 bankroll does not mean only $200 will be wagered. Reusing returned funds can create much larger cumulative action, and expected cost is tied to that action rather than simply the starting balance.
Time can be a useful limit
When decision speed is high, a time boundary can restrict repeated exposure even if stake size stays constant. Monetary and time limits address different dimensions of a session.
Do not optimize past an affordability limit
A lower-edge game can still be harmful if the amount or duration is unaffordable. Mathematical comparison belongs after the decision about whether the spending is acceptable at all.
