BetGuard & Ontario Centralized iGaming Self-Exclusion
What BetGuard does, who can use it and how centralized self-exclusion differs from a simple account time-out.
BetGuard is Ontario’s centralized self-exclusion tool for regulated online gambling. It launched May 14, 2026 and allows people aged 19+ to opt out across Ontario regulated online gaming platforms through one portal.
Market-wide effect
According to iGaming Ontario, a person enrolled through BetGuard is prevented from accessing existing regulated iGaming accounts, creating new accounts and receiving marketing communications from regulated sites.
Why centralized exclusion matters
Before market-wide exclusion, a person could need to self-exclude separately from multiple operators. Centralization reduces that fragmentation.
Operator programs still matter
iGaming Ontario states that operators must also maintain their own self-exclusion programs that meet the Registrar’s Standards.
Not the same as a casual break
Self-exclusion is a stronger control than a short voluntary time-out. Use the tool that matches the level of protection needed.
Support
If gambling is causing financial, emotional or relationship harm, self-exclusion can be combined with counselling or other support services rather than treated as a standalone technical fix.
